A fire tornado, or fire whirl, is a rare and dangerous phenomenon where intense heat and strong winds create a spinning vortex of flames.
Formed when rising hot air from wildfires mixes with turbulent winds, these fiery twisters can reach temperatures of 2,000°F (1,090°C) and speeds of 100 mph.
Unlike regular tornadoes, they spread fire by lifting burning debris and generating their own wind patterns, making them unpredictable and difficult to control.
Fire tornadoes have been observed in major wildfires globally, posing significant risks to firefighters and communities, and emphasizing the need for improved wildfire prevention and response.
