Harare embarks on operation chenesa Harare phase 3, can the city truly overcome its waste crisis, or is this just another fleeting initiative? In a bid to tackle the persistent issue of waste management, the Government has launched Operation Chenesa Harare Phase 3, collaborating with various partners to clear dumping sites and enhance cleanliness across the capital. The initiative unites the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, the City of Harare, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), and Geo Pomona Waste Management. This launch coincides with Geo Pomona Waste Management’s preparations to take over waste collection responsibilities in the city, providing them with a critical opportunity to gain practical experience in managing Harare’s waste management system. At the launch event held on Monday at Tichagarika Shops in Glen View, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe highlighted the vital role of private companies in waste management, commending Geo Pomona’s contributions. “The Government appreciates the private sector’s support during previous phases of Operation Chenesa Harare,” he stated. Minister Garwe expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that stakeholders have surpassed targets for solid waste deposited at Pomona Landfill. He also acknowledged donations from private sector partners, which included essential equipment like tipper trucks and refuse compactors to aid waste management efforts. “It is encouraging to see various stakeholders working together and surpassing the targets for solid waste deposited at Pomona Landfill.” Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Senator Charles Tawengwa, emphasized that cleanliness is crucial for attracting investment. “A dirty city leaves a negative impression on foreign investors. It hampers economic growth and job creation.” He warned, pointing out that unmanaged waste breeds disease-carrying pests, further exacerbating public health risks. “Unmanaged waste tarnishes our national pride and creates a breeding ground for disease-carrying pests such as mosquitoes, rodents, and flies.” Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, CEO of Geo Pomona Waste Management, stressed the necessity for a long-term solution and he called for a cultural shift towards cleanliness and environmental responsibility. “This should not be a one-time event but the start of sustained efforts to transform Harare into a cleaner city. We must embrace a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility in all aspects of our lives,” said Dr Nguwaya. Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume also underscored the importance of unity in maintaining the city’s cleanliness, asserting that waste management must transcend political divides. “Cleanliness is a shared responsibility that affects everyone, regardless of political affiliation,” he noted. While Operation Chenesa Harare Phase 3 aims to revitalize the city’s waste management practices, the critical question remains: will these efforts lead to lasting change, or are they merely a temporary fix in a long-standing battle against urban decay?
