With businesses now permitted to operate 24 hours, the installation of surveillance cameras in Kariakoo is set to commence on 1 March 2025. Speaking on Thursday, 27 February 2025, during the official launch of 24-hour business operations, Dar es Salaam Regional Administrative Secretary Dr Toba Nguvila provided an update on the ongoing preparations. Dr Nguvila announced that the city has already signed a contract with the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical, and Electronics Services Agency (TEMESA) for the installation of 40 cameras in the first phase. The project has been allocated a budget of Sh514.3 million. Regarding street lighting, he noted that the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is set to install more than 700 streetlights, with work expected to commence soon. Some traders raised concerns, stating that these installations should have been completed prior to the launch of the initiative. "I think the government rushed the launch before completing the installation of these essential facilities. That’s why, even though 24-hour business operations began three days ago, the response has been low—many areas in Kariakoo remain dark," said Zuhura Khamis, a trader.
