Ethiopia and Somalia have agreed to restore their relationship, ending a year of disagreements.
The announcement was made on Thursday, February 27, 2025, when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Mogadishu for the first time in over a year.
His visit aimed to ease tensions between the two countries, which had been in conflict both publicly and privately.
After their meeting, both leaders said they would continue strengthening their relationship and strengthening economic and social ties.
Prime Minister Abiy emphasised that cooperation would benefit the region more than division.
“The Horn of Africa has rich resources—fertile land, fresh water, and skilled people. But despite this, we still struggle to feed ourselves,” he said on Thursday. “This is why regional unity is important to achieve our shared goals.”
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud agreed, and in a statement from Villa Somalia, the Somali presidency, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace, security, and stronger ties for the benefit of their people and the wider Horn of Africa region.
This meeting followed another two weeks ago at the African Union summit, where they promised to rebuild their relationship. It is also part of efforts to improve ties after Turkey helped mediate between them in December, following a near-total breakdown in relations last year.
The conflict began on January 1, 2024, when Ethiopia signed a controversial deal with Somaliland, a region of Somalia that has long tried—but failed—to become independent.
