*What the U.S, Government funding freeze mean for the health of queer people in Nigeria:* 1- Queer people are (highly) vulnerable to acquiring HIV. All local data shows that HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men is much higher compared to the general population. 2- To reduce the risk of spreading HIV to other people, queer people who have been diagnosed with the virus needs to be on lifelong antiretroviral drugs and do regular check up. 3- To reduce the risk of acquiring HIV, queer people who are negative need to have regularly test themselves and be on PrEP. The benefit of PrEP in men who have sex with men is significant. 4- To prevent spread or acquisition of HIV, queer people must never run out of condoms and lubricants. HIV is easily transmitted through condomless intercourse. Lubricants prevent skin breakage during penetrative anal intercourse. 5- The US government through various agencies like USAID and CDC provides the antiretroviral drugs that keep people living with HIV healthy and alive. In addition, the US government provides the PrEP, condoms and lubricants that are used by many people. 6- The funding freeze by this current US government administration can interrupt access to these life saving interventions. An interruption means many people could become newly HIV positive without even knowing. And those people can infect other people. 7- The future of HIV services is uncertain at the moment. One possibility is that people will have to buy their medicines through insurance or out of pocket spending. Many queer people do not have the resources to buy these drugs consistently for life. 7- Queer people who are HIV negative need to be extra cautious all the time and take better care for their health. There is no such thing as being too careful. The goal is to remain negative. 8- Queer people who are HIV positive need to ensure that they don’t run out of their HIV medicines. Now is the time to get more refill and do your viral load testing as service provision could be disrupted in the near future. Stay glued to government information sources to keep updated on the situation of things. The goal is to remain healthy. 9- The chances of transmitting HIV to another person is very low if your viral load is undetectable. Queer people need to support each other by sharing information on adherence and healthy living. Saving one person helps the entire community. 10- Talk freely about HIV with your partner. This will ensure that everyone has the right information. Remember that information is power. Thank you. Stay safe. Stay alive. ✌️ *Share this information with all queer people in your network.*
