Here’s a brief history: The Legend of St. Valentine Long ago, in ancient Rome, there lived a brave and compassionate priest named Valentine. During the reign of Emperor Claudius II, soldiers were forbidden to marry, as the emperor believed single men made better warriors. But Valentine, moved by the pain of separated lovers, secretly performed marriages against the emperor's orders. Eventually, Valentine was discovered and imprisoned. While in jail, he became close to the jailer’s blind daughter, Julia. Valentine often shared stories of faith and hope with her, and, miraculously, Julia regained her sight. On the eve of his execution—February 14th—Valentine sent Julia a farewell note signed, "From your Valentine," creating the first-ever Valentine’s greeting. Valentine’s courage and sacrifice made him a symbol of love, not only romantic love but also love expressed through kindness, faith, and selflessness. Today, we honor his memory by sharing heartfelt messages, flowers, and tokens of affection.
