The Journal of Science Fiction is seeking applications for new editors to start in the spring of 2025. We seek editors with an established record of expertise in science fiction studies and related fields. Interested editors can expect to join an international, multidisciplinary team committed to promoting rigorous standards in publishing and attracting top-quality research to all subfields of science fiction. Please note that we currently rely on volunteer-based labor.
Editor Responsibilities:
Evaluate manuscripts submitted to the journal and make a first determination as to whether they should be sent to peer review, in collaboration with other editors.
Identify knowledgeable peer reviewers and evaluate reviewer comments.
Work with authors of selected pieces to improve manuscripts by offering suggestions for revision and preparing articles for publication
Promote the Journal on social media and in your professional network.
Required/Preferred Qualities for Editors:
M.A. or Ph.D. in Humanities, Sciences, or Social Sciences, or equivalent editorial experience required. Knowledge of English and excellent written communication skills, the ability to gather information and make judgements in a broad set of fields (related to but not solely science and speculative fiction studies), a commitment to anti-racism and inclusion, and the ability to work as part of a diverse team are also essential.
To apply, applicants should submit a CV and a 1-page letter addressing their research expertise, experience with academic journals, institutional resources that may benefit the Journal, and how the Journal fits within their professional trajectory. The deadline for accepting applications is March 1st, 2025. Please email to [email protected] and [email protected] with “JOSF Editor Application” in the subject line.
