Hetauda Cement Industry (HCI) is facing a deepening financial crisis, severely affecting production.
The state-owned factory has been shut down since Oct. 1, 2024, initially for machine repairs. While maintenance was expected to be completed by mid-November, delays have pushed back the reopening.
"Maintenance is not the only reason for the delay," said Hareram Aryal, HCI’s administration chief and spokesperson. "With the ongoing financial crisis, it is uncertain when production will resume."
Despite zero production, operational costs—including employee salaries and fuel expenses—continue to mount, further straining the company's finances, he added.
