*Deputy Minister Manamela Engages Northern Cape Institutions on Student Funding and Readiness*
Kimberley – 25 February 2025
Deputy Minister of Higher Education, and Training, Buti Manamela, is conducting an oversight visit to post-school institutions in the Northern Cape, engaging with students, institutional management, and provincial leadership on key issues affecting higher education in the province.
The visit includes Northern Cape Urban TVET College, Sol Plaatje University, and the Galeshewe Community Learning Centre, focusing on NSFAS funding, student debt, accommodation shortages, and institutional readiness for the 2025 academic year.
Manamela’s engagements come amid ongoing concerns about NSFAS disbursement delays, pending student appeals, and the implementation of new funding policies, particularly for TVET students. The recent standardization of student allowances across universities and TVET colleges—a 46% increase—has been welcomed, but challenges remain in funding allocations and accommodation availability.
The Deputy Minister will also meet with the Northern Cape Premier to discuss broader post-school education priorities.
“We are here to listen to students, assess the challenges they are facing, and ensure that institutions are fully prepared to support them throughout the academic year,” said Manamela.
The visit forms part of ongoing government efforts to strengthen access to education, ensure funding issues are resolved, and improve conditions for students in both university and TVET sectors.
