UPDATE: SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS FOR ABOVE NORMAL SWELL HEIGHTS Seas have been moderate to rough in open water over the past two days and similar conditions are expected to persist into early next week. As a result, a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT from today February 1. Possible Impacts Small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for the possibility of large open water swells that could be hazardous to some vessels. The operation of smaller vessels may be difficult at times. There is the possibility of loss of life or injury. What you Should do Marine users are encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further information on what to do. If you intend to go into the water, it is recommended that you use beaches with on-duty lifeguards. Discussion The Atlantic high-pressure system continues to generate strong surface to low-level wind speeds which has resulted in an agitation in the seas. Additionally, data from the NOAA buoy positioned in the Atlantic, east of the island chain, shows that swell heights are currently between 2.0m to 3.0m in open waters. Model guidance indicates a gradual improvement in these conditions is expected by Wednesday, February 5. General Information A small-craft advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 meters (8 to 10 feet) are affecting the marine area. This small-craft advisory will be updated at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 3 or sooner if conditions warrant.
