SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS FOR ABOVE NORMAL SWELL HEIGHTS
Moderate to rough seas are expected in Barbados' territorial waters from the night of Monday, February 10, and much of the week. Therefore, the BMS has issued a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY for above normal sea swells.
Possible Impacts
Small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for the possibility of large open water swells that may be hazardous to some vessels. Operation of smaller vessels may become difficult at times due to large swells.
What you Should do
Marine users are encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further information on what to do. If you intend to go into the water, it is recommended that you use beaches with on-duty lifeguards.
Discussion
A strengthening Atlantic high-pressure system is expected to generate strong surface to low-level wind speeds and an agitation in the seas. Model guidance is suggesting that swells will be moderate to rough in open water with heights of 2.5 to 3.0m from Monday night and for much of the week.
General Information
A small-craft advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet) are forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours. This small craft advisory was issued at 6:00 p.m. will be updated at noon on Monday, February 10, or sooner if conditions warrant.
