22 February 2025 Swami Paramarthananda explains that Saguna Upasana and Nirguna Upasana are both essential for spiritual progress. Beginners start with devotion to a personal God, which purifies the mind and strengthens focus. As seekers mature, they transition to contemplation on the formless, infinite Brahman, requiring intellectual discipline and detachment. Bhakti ultimately leads to Jnana, where one realizes the unity of the worshipper, the worshipped, and the act of worship. Both paths are valid, but Nirguna Upasana is easier after mastering Saguna Upasana, making devotion a preparatory step for self-realization.
