WSO is close to its next concert performance, on Sunday 23 February at 2.30pm in the William Aston Hall, Wrexham University, Mold Road LL11 2AW.
In “East meets West”, the orchestra hopes to show that music is the one thing that can unite us all, transcending politics and other differences.
The programme begins with Polish composer Lutosławski’s engaging “Little Suite”, and this is followed by Tchaikovsky’s famous violin concerto, played by award-winning concert violinist Elizaveta Saul.
Two American composers fill the second half. Firstly, we welcome the rhythmic delights of Copland’s “El Salon Mexico”, instantly transporting us to Central America. This is followed by a suite from Bernstein’s “On the Town”, from the musical and mid 20th century Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra film of the same name.
Finally we return to Copland for the suite from his Wild West ballet “Rodeo”, featuring the ever-popular “Hoe-Down”.
The concert continues a long and exciting association with conductor Steven Threlfall, formerly the director of music at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester.
