The European Commission has published concise (12-page) guidance on the definition of an AI System under the AI Act. The guidance explains that an AI system comprises seven main elements and the meaning of each element - i.e an AI system =
1. A machine-based system
2. Designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy
3. *May* exhibit adaptiveness after deployment (i.e. not mandatory)
4. Designed to operate according to one or more objectives
5. Makes inferences from the input its receives
6. Produces as outputs predictions, content, recommendations or decisions
7. Whose outputs can influence physical or virtual environments
Most importantly, the guidance also seeks to clarify what is NOT an AI system - see the infographic below. Spoiler alert: Spreadsheets are NOT AI.
