*Struggling but not frustrated* 😞
Hey there,
Let me tell you about my day yesterday.
Yes I wasn't here for some days now,
I have been preparing for my exams and dissertation writing (Master's project )
So I have been delving into deep research recently,
At first, things were going smoothly.
But then, I hit a wall. The questions were tough, and I wasn’t sure how to approach them.
I started asking myself:
What do I do next?
How can I make this easier in the future?
I felt stuck.
Frustration crept in. I just wanted to be done with it.
But instead of giving up, I pushed a little further. I checked some YouTube videos, tried different approaches, and even though my first few attempts didn’t work, I stayed at it.
I downloaded whole lots of research papers, because I needed to understand that particular concept.
Then, suddenly—boom!
I figured it out.
That moment of clarity, when everything finally made sense, felt amazing.
What does this have to do with you?
It’s simple. That struggle? That confusion? That’s exactly what learning is supposed to feel like.
There is a term for this in learning science,
And It's called,
The Learning Pit,
Imagine you’re standing at the edge of a deep pit.
On the other side is success—understanding a tough concept, mastering a subject, or solving a problem that once felt impossible.
But before you get there, you have to go through the pit.
This idea, called The Learning Pit, was developed by educator James Nottingham.
It explains the stages of deep learning. Most students fear this struggle, but it’s actually where the magic happens.
Let me break it down for you:
The Four Quadrants of the Learning Pit
✅ 1. Comfort Zone:
This is where you start. Everything is familiar, and learning feels easy. But there’s little growth here.
⚠️ 2. Challenge/Conflict:
You hit something new and difficult. You don’t understand it yet. You feel confused, maybe even frustrated. This is where most students give up—but don’t. This is the entry into the pit.
🌀 3. The Pit (Struggle Phase):
This is where real learning happens. It’s messy, uncomfortable, and full of mistakes. But your brain is making new connections. If you stay with it, you’ll start to see progress.
🏆 4. Climb Out (Breakthrough Phase):
With persistence and the right strategies, things start clicking. You experience the Eureka moment.
Now, you don’t just know the concept—you understand it deeply.
Every time you struggle with a concept, remember: you’re not failing—you’re learning.
The Learning Pit is not a place to avoid; it’s a place to embrace.
In my next letter, I’ll show you why this struggle is crucial for your academic growth and how to navigate it like a pro.
Until then,
🥂 To your study exam success
