The City of Bulawayo today marked a historic milestone through the launch of the Sustainability Monograph - which is a strategic Roadmap on becoming Zimbabwe’s first Sustainable and Net Zero City by 2050. The Monograph was launched by the Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Honourable Dr Sithembiso G. G Nyoni who highlighted that the Monograph was a beacon of hope in the collective fight against climate change as this mirrored the National resolve to secure a resilient future for generations to come. She added that the Monograph was not an isolated effort but a critical piece of a Larger Puzzle of Zimbabwe’s Strategic Framework to climate change adaptation and the proposed Climate Change Management Bill. Zimbabwe’s 2024–2025 Agenda has been emphasizing Biodiversity Conservation, Water Security and Community Resilience among other efforts. The Monograph outlines Bulawayo’s goal of achieving a 40% emissions reduction per capita, in line with Zimbabwe’s commitment to the Global Net Zero by 2050. Drawing from Global Best Practices, the Monograph prioritizes 6 Key Features of Sustainable Cities as follows; 1. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy 2. Sustainable Transportation 3. Waste Management and Circular Economy- Trash to Treasure. 4. Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity 5. Inclusive development- Leaving No one Behind. 6. Collaboration and Transparency: United for Impact The event also showcased the 10 projects successfully completed by the Round 1 Youth Climate Action Fund Microgrant Awardees. It was noted that this was a testament to the City’s commitment to empowering young leaders in attending the challenges climate change.
