In a serene and beautiful forest, there was an ashram where Vedavyasa and his disciples resided. Every day, Vedavyasa would impart lessons on Vedanta to his disciples. On one occasion, it was time to expound on a particular verse.
The verse was, "Balavaan indriyagraamo vidvaansamapikarshati," which means the senses are so powerful that they can even mislead and corrupt a wise person. Upon hearing this, a disciple named Jaimini was not convinced. He expressed his disagreement, saying that it didn't seem right to him that senses could corrupt a wise person. In response, Vedavyasa did not argue but moved past the topic. Some days passed, and Vedavyasa left the ashram for a while due to some work, leaving Jaimini alone.
As evening descended, it began to drizzle. In the ashram's corridor, a young girl was sobbing softly. As time passed, her cries grew louder, clearly sounding like those of a young woman. Curious, Jaimini went out and observed the situation. The girl cried, "Who is it?" He asked. "Sir, I am an orphan. I came with some other girls, who have gone elsewhere, leaving me alone. I came here thinking it was an ashram," she replied.
Jaimini explained, "This is a place only for ascetics. There is no room for any girl here." To which she pleaded, "Sir, where can I go in this darkness? I will sleep in any corner you allow." Jaimini, perhaps a bit hesitantly, pointed to a corner and said, "If that is the case, you may sleep there."
Time passed, and Jaimini, finding himself alone with this young girl, felt his mind being swayed. "Come here," he beckoned. She replied, "Sir, I am a young girl, and I will remain here." Unable to resist, Jaimini approached her, reaching out to her, perhaps with intentions that were not entirely virtuous. In that moment, the girl transformed into his Guru, Vedavyasa. Vedavyasa reiterated the verse, "Balavaan indriyagraamo vidvaansamapikarshati," emphasizing that Jaimini's mind had indeed been led astray by his senses in the presence of a woman.
This incident illustrated the powerful message that even wise and learned individuals must guard themselves against the pull of their senses, for they can lead one astray if not kept in check. Thus, wise men and women must constantly strive to protect themselves from such influences.
