While Sage Kashyapa was performing a great sacrifice, Sage Narada approached him and asked, "Are you performing a sacrifice now? To which among the three deities will you dedicate the fruits of this sacrifice?" Kashyapa Maharishi replied, "I do not understand that." Narada suggested, "It would be wise to evaluate the Trimurti. To accomplish this, it would be better to send Bhrigu Maharshi to examine the Trimurti." Narada affirmed that Kashyapa Maharishi's confusion was understandable and communicated this plan to Bhrigu Maharshi. Bhrigu Maharshi agreed to undertake this task and first traveled to Brahmaloka. There, Brahma and Goddess Saraswati were engaged in a discussion about the Vedas and did not notice Bhrigu Maharshi's arrival. Next, Bhrigu Maharshi journeyed to Kailash, where Shiva and Parvati were in private, and they too failed to observe his presence. Finally, Bhrigu Maharshi visited Vaikuntha. Finding Lord Vishnu asleep on his throne, Bhrigu Maharshi tried to wake him, but even then, Vishnu did not stir. Frustrated that neither Brahma nor Shiva had acknowledged him, and now angered by Vishnu's apparent disregard, Bhrigu Maharshi kicked Vishnu's chest. This action left a mark on Vishnu's chest, known as the Sri Vatsa. However, rather than punishing Bhrigu Maharshi, Vishnu kindly seated him and said, "Lord Bhrigu, you must have hurt your foot when you kicked my strong chest." Lord Vishnu then held Bhrigu's feet and removed the eye of pride from that foot. Consequently, Bhrigu's pride was diminished, and he sought Vishnu's forgiveness. However, Goddess Lakshmi could not remain silent. Goddess Lakshmi cursed the entire Brahmin dynasty, saying, "Have you insulted me by kicking my husband in the chest? Don't you know, Bhrigu Maharshi, that I always reside in Vishnu's chest? Yet you have insulted my place by kicking Vishnu there. I am cursing the entire Brahmin clan: * Your lineage as Brahmins will forever remain mired in poverty. * I will not live in the homes of Brahmins, and you will continue to live in poverty. Afterward, because Lord Vishnu did not punish Sage Bhrigu, Goddess Lakshmi became angry with Vishnu and left Vaikuntha to reside on Earth. Eventually, she went to Tirumala in search of herself and later married Padmavati. This is a widely known story. Concerned about the Brahmin caste having to endure poverty due to Goddess Lakshmi's curse, Sage Bhrigu Maharshi, with the grace of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati, discovered the Jataka Astrology Shastra, known as the Bhrigu Samhita. Some parts of this ancient text have been lost, and some are said to be located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
