PSA means Prostate-specific antigen, and it is a protein produced by normal and malignant cells of the prostate gland.
The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood.
Prostate cancer and several other benign conditions like BPH and Prostatitis can increase PSA levels in the blood.
This test is used for different purposes :
1• It is used to monitor the progression of prostate cancer in men who have been diagnosed already.
2• It is used to follow up on prostate symptoms, like painful or frequent urination, blood in urine or semen, and pelvic and/or back pain
3• It is used to screen for prostate cancer in men who do not have symptoms of the disease yet.
It is recommended that men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer have routine PSA testing, starting from age 40.
Who is at higher risk?
-Black men
-Men with inherited variants in BRCA2 (and to a lesser extent, in BRCA1)
- Men whose father or brother had prostate cancer.
