If your PSA levels are abnormal, your doctor may recommend a biopsy to rule out cancer.
In doing a biopsy, small samples of prostate tissue will be taken and examined under a microscope to look out for cancer cells.
PSA level varies based on age. For younger men, a PSA value of above 2.5ng/ml may be considered high. In older men, a PSA level may mean above 3.5-4.5.
In much older men, it could be rated as above 5ng/ml.
What this means is that, based on your age, your doctor can ascertain if your PSA level is high or low
A 45-year-old man may have the same result as a 60-year-old man and only the 45-year-old man would be regarded as having a high PSA level.
The reason is simple, PSA level increases as a man ages.
Men who are at higher risk are advised to do routine screening.
