*MDC HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE PAST WEEK, MAY 2025*
*NO TO THE DESECRATION OF OUR CONSTITUTION*
*MASVINGO TOUR*
The Movement for Democratic Change President Hon Senator Douglas Mwonzora is on a country wide tour, consulting the party faithful about President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's attempts to amend the country's constitution so that he becomes a life president.
Below is his speech in Masvingo.
On January 15, 2025, in Harare, we called for a press conference to register our displeasure and opposition to Zanu-PF's attempts to amend the constitution so that President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa can be a life President.
Judging by his age, that is exactly what they wish to do.
This current constitution came after a long protracted fight, and it even costed the life of our Mbare Chairperson who was killed during the outreach programme.
The Importance of Our Constitution
Our constitution encompasses a comprehensive Bill of Rights, independent institutions supporting
democracy, and limitations on the terms of office for both the President and Parliament. We regard
this document as sacrosanct, and its integrity must be preserved.
The Broken Promises of ZANU PF
Following the military coup of 2017, ZANU PF promised a new era—the Second Republic, distinct
from the first under Robert Mugabe. However, recent actions suggest a retreat from these promises.
After the disputed 2023 election, which we ad the MDC boycotted because of an unconstitutional delimitation report that disenfrached thousands of voters across the country.
Some elements within ZANU PF began advocating for President
Mnangagwa to seek a third term, directly contradicting the constitutional provisions.
Initially, President Mnangagwa distanced himself from this campaign, but the opposition in
Parliament has since joined the agenda, raising questions about their motivations.
Reports indicate
that they were incentivized with lavish parties and promises of better conditions, suggesting a selfserving
agenda rather than a commitment to democracy.
This is a direct threat to the Country's Constitution
ZANU PF's Agenda 2030:
Despite promises of a new era, some within ZANU PF are pushing for
President Mnangagwa to serve a third term, violating the Constitution.
*Opposition Complicity and Conclusion:*
Shockingly, the opposition, seemingly influenced by inducements and
promises, has joined this unconstitutional agenda, something that I predicted a long time ago in Bulawayo.
*President Mnangagwa's Ambiguity:*
While initially rejecting the idea, President Mnangagwa's silence
and the pursuit of this agenda within his sphere of influence suggests tacit approval.
*The MDC's Position*
The MDC categorically rejects these constitutional amendments for the following reasons:
1. Violation of Democratic Principles: The proposed amendments undermine the core
democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution and contradict international best
practices.
2. Self-Serving Motives: These amendments primarily serve the interests of politicians seeking
to extend their power, potentially establishing a political dynasty.
3. Ignoring the People's Suffering: The amendments are proposed despite the severe
economic hardships faced by Zimbabweans and the government's failure to address these
issues.
4. Return of Long-Term Rule: The amendments risk returning Zimbabwe to an era of prolonged
rule by a single individual, reminiscent of the Mugabe era.
5. Health and Age Concerns: President Mnangagwa's advanced age raises serious concerns
about his ability to effectively lead the country for an extended period.
6. International Isolation: These amendments will further isolate Zimbabwe internationally
and hinder efforts to rejoin the Commonwealth.
*Call to Action and unity of all opposition forces*
The MDC calls upon all Zimbabweans, regardless of political affiliation, to unite and oppose these
unconstitutional amendments.
To the Opposition: We urge the opposition to prioritize national interests over personal gains and to
stand united against this threat to democracy.
*To the International Community:*
We appeal to the international community, particularly African
nations, to support Zimbabwe's fight for democracy and uphold constitutional principles.
Addressing Critical Issues
Beyond the constitutional crisis, Zimbabwe faces severe economic and social challenges:
*Economic Collapse:*
The economy is in freefall, leading to widespread poverty, job losses, and
declining living standards.
Social Hardships: Citizens endure inadequate healthcare, poor education, and deteriorating living
conditions.
*Pensioner Distress:*
Pensioners struggle to survive on meagre benefits.
*Unfair Labour Practices:*
The proposed increase in the retirement age is unjust and burdens older
workers.
*Over taxation:*
Business and individuals are suffering under the burden of over taxation visited on them by the current government.
*Conclusion*
Zimbabweans are facing a multifaceted crisis. While the fight against unconstitutional amendments
is paramount. Addressing the urgent economic and social needs of our people remains crucial. The
MDC will continue to advocate for the well-being of all Zimbabweans and fight for a just and prosperous future. Therefore, Masvingo as a province is called upon to deny President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's attempts to desecrate the country's constitution.
