*CARING OF CHICKS FROM DAY OLD TO 2 WEEKS*(Brooding Phase)
1. *Pre-Arrival Preparation 📦*
Before your chicks arrive, make sure you have everything you need to care for them. This includes:
- A brooder 🏠: a safe and warm place for your chicks to live
- Bedding 🛋️: pine shavings or other safe materials to keep the brooder clean and dry
- Feed 🍴: starter feed with 20-22% protein
- Water 💧: shallow waterers with marbles or pebbles to prevent drowning
- Heat source 🔥: a heat lamp or brooder plate to maintain a warm temperature
2. *Receiving the Chicks 🚚*
When your chicks arrive, inspect them immediately for any signs of stress or injury. Check for:
- Live chicks 🐥: make sure they're moving and peeping
- Casualties ☹️: if any chicks have died during transit, notify the seller
a. *Hydration First 💧*
After inspecting the chicks, give them water first. Dip their beaks into room-temperature water with electrolytes that is *Endocox* to encourage drinking. This helps rehydrate them after their journey.
B. *Gradual Warm-Up 🔥*
Place the chicks in the preheated brooder, but avoid direct heat. This helps them adjust to the new temperature gradually.
3. *First 2 Weeks Care 🐓*
- *Temperature 🌡️*: Maintain a temperature of 35°C (95°F) for the first week, and reduce it by 3°C (5°F) each week.
- *Humidity 💦*: Keep the humidity level between 50-60%.
- *Feed 🍴*: Offer starter feed with 20-22% protein.
- *Water 💧*: Ensure access to fresh, clean water at all times.
- *Monitor 👀*: Check for signs of stress, illness, or injury.
*Common Issues 🤔*
- *Pasty butt 🚽*: a condition where the chick's vent becomes clogged with feces. Clean the vent with a warm cloth.
- *Dehydration 💧*: offer electrolyte water to help rehydrate the chick.
- *Stress 😬*: provide a calm and quiet environment to reduce stress.
*Tips for Beginners 🤝*
- *Keep the brooder clean and dry 🧹*: remove soiled bedding and replace it with fresh material.
- *Provide adequate ventilation 💨*: ensure good airflow to prevent respiratory problems.
- *Monitor temperature and humidity 📊*: use a thermometer and hygrometer to ensure optimal conditions.
