*GRAD RECAP* – After years of juggling night shifts as a nurse and medical school by day, Onazo Daniso has achieved her dream of becoming a doctor. This week, the 29-year-old graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
Daniso, now an intern at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Durban, overcame years of financial hardship, emotional strain, and frontline pandemic duty to reach this milestone. Her passion for medicine began in rural Lusikisiki and was reinforced in high school by a teacher who saw her potential.
Initially accepted to study nursing in 2014, she faced funding struggles but remained determined. After completing her nursing degree and mandatory service, she saved most of her income to repay her bursary, enabling her to begin her medical studies in 2019 at UKZN.
Throughout medical school, Daniso worked part-time, launched a fundraising campaign, and served in key student leadership roles. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked in high-risk hospital wards, an experience that further solidified her resolve to become a doctor.
She even earned a scholarship to study in Austria and led her final-year class.
Today, she stands as a symbol of resilience, proud of her journey and ready for the next chapter in her medical career.
