Bhagavad Gita 13.22
Though the soul is eternal and beyond matter, it resides in the body and interacts with material nature.
By associating with the three qualities—sattva (purity), rajas (activity), and tamas (inertia)—the jiva begins to identify with them. This identification leads it to enjoy pleasure and suffer pain. Over time, attachment to these qualities becomes the cause of repeated births in higher or lower forms of life.
The verse teaches us to observe how we respond to situations and not get entangled. Freedom begins when we see ourselves as separate from the ever-changing play of nature.
