Born in Dakar in 1906 into a Lebu family, Diop grew up surrounded by the oral traditions of West Africa. He studied at the prestigious École Vétérinaire de Toulouse in France, qualifying as a veterinarian, but his love for African culture and oral storytelling led him down a literary path that would influence generations. Additionally, Diop served as a diplomat. He was Senegal’s ambassador to Tunisia.
