*At Independence, the ZANU-PF government viewed figures like Jairos Jiri and Safirio Madzikatire with suspicion, branding them as collaborators (sellouts) funded by the Rhodesian regime.*

As a result, state support for social services linked to Jairos Jiri Association was withdrawn. Even Robert Mugabe used to publicly disparaged Paul Matavire, referring to him dismissively and in his inner cycle they saw him as a product of Rhodesia through Jairos Jiri.
Today, Jairos Jiri, alongside the likes of George Shaya remains one of Zimbabwe’s most overlooked national heroes. He deserves to be honoured with statues and national institutions bearing his name. Yet, while numerous roads and buildings still carry the name of politicians and the likes of Alfred Beit—a colonial-era Jewish civil engineer—there is not a single national monument commemorating Jairos Jiri’s legacy. Tragically, his widow now lives in poverty, a stark reflection of the nation’s failure to properly recognise and preserve the contributions of its own people.
