While humans and most other mammals have only one copy of this crucial gene, African elephants have at least 20 copies. P53 is a tumor suppressor gene. It plays a crucial role in repairing damaged DNA and, if the damage is too severe, triggers programmed cell death (apoptosis) to prevent the formation of tumors.
