Elephants almost never get cancer. Scientists may finally know why. And with this knowledge, we could save countless human lives. Scientists have discovered that elephants have a remarkable defense mechanism involving the TP53 gene, also known as p53. While humans and most other mammals have only one copy of this crucial gene, African elephants have at least 20 copies. P53 is a tumor suppressor gene. It plays a crucial role in repairing damaged DNA and, if the damage is too severe, triggers programmed cell death (apoptosis) to prevent the formation of tumors.
