Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Shri George Kurian visited Mizoram to review ongoing fisheries projects and unlock new opportunities for fish farmers in the state.
During his visit, the Minister inspected private fish ponds and reviewed the proposed site for a Fish Farmersโ Training Centre under the North Eastern Council (NEC) at the Laldenga Fisheries Demonstration Farm, Lengpui. Officers from the fisheries department shared the local challenges and presented key proposals โ including the creation of an Integrated Aqua Park at Zawlnuam in Mamit district.
Shri Kurian assured full support and highlighted the Equity Grant scheme under the Fish Farmers Producer Organisation (FFPO), which aims to provide financial help to small-scale fish farmers. He also encouraged the local production of fish feed through startups and announced that central officers will be deployed for awareness drives on various government schemes.
He emphasized that Mizoram has strong potential in aquaculture, with over 26.5% of 24,000 hectares already identified as ideal for fish farming.
The Minister also visited the Ornamental Fish Rearing Units at Khatla, which are functioning as Sales Outlets under the PMMSY (Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana). This scheme aims to modernize and expand Indiaโs fisheries sector with a focus on sustainability and value chain development.
Shri Kurian was warmly welcomed by the Mizoram Volleyball Association at the airport. He is also set to attend the Pro Volleyball League match at LPS Arena in Falkland before heading back to New Delhi.
