The incident occurred as Mudzimereka was patrolling a dense thicket, where he unexpectedly confronted a protective rhino cow and her calf. According to reports from Tihlo Ra Le Hlengweni News, Mudzimereka sustained severe injuries, including major wounds to his stomach, shoulder, knee, and the back of his head. Following the attack, an emergency Medevac flight was quickly arranged to transport him to Harare for urgent medical treatment. In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Save Valley Conservancy appealed to the public for assistance with Mudzimereka's hospital expenses, noting that the medical costs are likely to be significant. "Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly towards hospital bills, rehabilitation, and supporting his family while he heals," they urged, emphasizing the need for community support for rangers who risk their lives for wildlife conservation. As of the latest update, Mudzimereka remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is currently in an induced coma on a ventilator.
