*Uncertain Future for Chilonga Bridge in Chiredzi South*
Residents of Chiredzi South are grappling with transportation challenges as they continue to rely on a makeshift bridge to cross the Runde River. This situation arose after the Chilonga Causeway collapsed in March 2025, a structure that had served as a temporary fix following the earlier collapse of the Chipinda Bridge in 2000. The community's access to essential services in Chiredzi town, including healthcare, banking, and Government services, hangs in the balance.
In a recent Parliamentary session, Honourable Ropafadzo Makumire, the Member of Parliament for Chiredzi Central, questioned Hon Felix Mhona, the Minister of Roads and Infrastructural Development, about plans for a new bridge. Hon.Mhona explained that significant planning and design work is necessary before construction can begin. A potential site has been identified five kilometers downstream from the collapsed causeway, where the new bridge is projected to span 500 meters.
Currently, detailed designs for the bridge's superstructure are nearing completion, with finalization expected by mid-June 2025. The projected cost for the new Chilonga Bridge stands at approximately USD 72 million, earmarked for inclusion in the Government’s budget for 2026. Hon Mhona highlighted concerns regarding local soil conditions, which have been deemed inadequate to support the bridge's weight. To ensure the project’s viability, multiple topographical and geotechnical surveys will be conducted.
Compounding these issues is the state of Inyathi Road, the primary access route to Chiredzi. Minister Hon Mhona indicated that recent tender evaluations for road refurbishment revealed excessively high costs from the selected contractor, necessitating a reevaluation before work can commence. The road, previously part of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Program (ERRP), remains unfinished due to delays in payments, with only 2.2 kilometers having been primed.
As the community awaits further updates, the Government’s ongoing commitment to addressing these pressing infrastructure challenges offers a glimmer of hope for the residents of Chiredzi South.
