*Crime Watch: The Murder of a University Student Reminds Us—Student Safety Doesn’t End at the Campus Gates* The murder of Olorato Mongale, a 30-year-old university student, has shocked South Africa. She left home on what was meant to be a date and never returned. Picked up by a man using the name “John” in a white VW Polo with cloned number plates, she was unfortunately murdered within two hours and her body was later found between Alexandra and Lombardy West This wasn’t a random act of violence. It was premeditated, calculated, and tragically successful—because help didn’t reach her in time While we cannot undo what has happened, it’s important to ask: what could have made a difference? Olorato was a student navigating life beyond the classroom—like so many others who live off-campus, travel independently, or meet new people through online platforms. The reality is that safety risks extend far beyond the campus gate, and young women are too often left to navigate those risks alone What could have changed the outcome? It’s not about technology replacing responsibility—it’s about equipping people with tools that work when no one else is around 🚨A panic alert, discreetly triggered the moment something felt wrong, could have sent her live location to people who could act 🚨A real-time tracking feature, shared with a trusted contact, could have raised red flags when her route changed or she stopped responding 🚨A wearable panic device, independent of her phone, could have allowed her to call for help even if her phone was taken, or discreetly push panic and keep the button in her pocket 🚨A 24/7 monitoring network, watching over each alert, could have mobilized a response faster—possibly before it was too late 🚨Family Panic - Had she pushed panic in a family subscription her loved ones would have received a notification she was in trouble with her location while our Command Centre dispatched a vehicle to her location These aren’t “nice to haves” in our world anymore. They are essential layers of protection—especially for students, especially for women, and especially now. SaferCity exists to bridge this gap between danger and response. We build connected safety tools—because safety shouldn’t rely on luck.
