Aligarh Muslim University Celebrates 150 Years: A Legacy of Excellence Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), founded 150 years ago, has grown from humble beginnings to a global educational powerhouse. Established on May 24, 1875, by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan with just seven students and a modest budget of ₹700, AMU began as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College on a 74-acre land in Aligarh. Over time, AMU has transformed into a world-renowned institution, becoming a university in 1920, two decades after Sir Syed's death. Today, the university offers over 300 courses and boasts a student body of more than 30,000. Its influence extends beyond borders, with students from 110 countries pursuing education here. AMU’s alumni have contributed significantly to various fields, with notable figures such as Bharat Ratna awardees, Padma award winners, and judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts among its distinguished graduates. From a modest start to a global educational giant, AMU's journey is a testament to its commitment to academic excellence and social development.
