A Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) report has revealed a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly chlamydia and gonorrhea, among sexually active adolescents across Kenya. Conducted between February 2020 and May 2021 in partnership with the University of California San Francisco, the study tested urine samples from 1,167 adolescents aged 15–19 and found that 111 tested positive for STIs; 102 for chlamydia and 15 for gonorrhea, with six having both. Girls accounted for the majority of infections. Notably, five adolescents who denied being sexually active also tested positive, pointing to stigma-related underreporting. The study demonstrates the shortcomings of Kenya’s syndromic STI management approach, which misses many asymptomatic cases. Researchers have urged the adoption of lab-based testing such as urine diagnostics, which had a high acceptance rate among participants, to improve detection and treatment among young people.
