He also imposed partial travel restrictions on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Trump left Syria and Iraq off the new list, after having included them in his 2017 travel ban during his first term. Trump justified the move by claiming it was meant to protect US national security from terrorism and threats to public safety. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) described the ban as “unnecessary, overbroad and ideologically motivated,” warning that it risks separating families, depriving students of educational opportunities and blocking patients from access to unique medical treatment.
