π₯SALIVARY GLAND ULTRASONOGRAPHY:
βοΈSalivary gland ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging technique used to examine the salivary glands using ultrasound waves.
βοΈ It is commonly used to evaluate swelling, pain, lumps, or other abnormalities in the salivary glands.
β
Main Salivary Glands Assessed:
1. Parotid glands (largest, near the ear)
2. Submandibular glands (beneath the jaw)
3. Sublingual glands (under the tongue β harder to visualize by ultrasound)
π Indications (Why it's done):
Swelling or enlargement of salivary glands
Suspected stones (sialolithiasis)
Infections or abscesses
Tumors or cysts
Sjogrenβs syndrome (autoimmune disease)
Evaluation of dry mouth (xerostomia)
π¬ What Ultrasound Can Show:
Size and shape of the gland
Presence of masses or tumors
Stones blocking ducts
Cystic vs solid lesions
Inflammation or abscesses
π‘ Advantages:
Painless and quick
No radiation
Cost-effective
Good for repeated follow-up
