The Churches Jubilee Year Celebrations were officially launched this week at APEC Haus, signalling the beginning of a nationwide spiritual journey ahead of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary in 2025. Prime Minister James Marape led the launch, which was themed “Niupela Peles, Niupela PNG, Yumi Hamamas.” The event drew a large crowd, including government officials, church leaders, and citizens from across the country, all gathered to honor the Church’s role in the nation's development. During his address, Marape reflected on the Church’s significant contribution to PNG’s moral foundation, education, health services, and community leadership. He shared personal stories from his upbringing in a religious household, crediting his faith for shaping his values and career. Adding a heartfelt touch, Marape brought his 81-year-old father, a former Seventh-day Adventist pastor, to the event. The elder Marape served in various parts of PNG before independence, symbolizing the deep roots and sacrifices of the Church in national development.
