Former Public Works minister Joel Gabbuza is reportedly fighting for his life at Hwange Colliery Hospital after allegedly being attacked with an axe. The incident, the details of which remain sketchy, has left the former Binga South Member of Parliament in a critical condition.
While unconfirmed reports initially suggested that Gabbuza had succumbed to his injuries, his son has confirmed that the former minister is alive and receiving medical care.
“He is receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital. His condition has improved from last night, he is now able to speak,” Gabbuza’s son told Cite, a Bulawayo-based news platform. “We are making arrangements to transfer him to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo.”
Matabeleland North police have confirmed the incident but referred further inquiries to national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, who could not be reached for comment.
According to a source, the attack occurred in Kamativi, with the assailant accusing Gabbuza of having an affair with his wife.
“Gabuzza went to a certain home in Kamativi in the company of a lady and had to put up there and sometime in the morning a man and his son attacked him, accusing him of having an extramarital affair with the lady,” the source claimed. “So he was sent to Kamativi but was later sent to Hwange Colliarey where he is being managed.”
The alleged motive behind the attack points to a potential crime of passion, fuelled by accusations of infidelity. However, authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Joel Gabbuza is a veteran politician who served as Minister of Water Resources and Development during Zimbabwe’s Government of National Unity (GNU) between 2008 and 2013. His political career spans over two decades, having first been elected as the Member of Parliament for Binga in 2000 under the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Following the 2008 electoral boundary changes, which divided Binga into Binga North and Binga South, Gabbuza continued to represent Binga South. He successfully retained his seat in subsequent elections, including the 2013 general elections.
Gabbuza’s tenure as MP came to an abrupt end in October 2023 when he was recalled by Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-proclaimed interim secretary-general of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), shortly after winning the seat once again for the opposition. This recall marked a controversial conclusion to his long and impactful career in parliament.
The incident involving Gabbuza has prompted concern among political circles and the wider community. It raises questions about the safety and security of public figures and the potential for politically motivated violence.
As Gabbuza battles for his life in hospital, investigations into the attack are ongoing. The nation awaits further details from law enforcement agencies regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident and the identity of the perpetrator.
