HARARE – Police have arrested six men in connection with the abduction and violent assault of cross-border trader Charlotte Dube, who was falsely accused of theft and brutally beaten in a shocking case of mistaken identity.
The suspects allegedly detained Charlotte upon arrival in Harare, taking her to the Zebra Kiss company garage, where she was brutally assaulted using wooden planks.
She sustained visible injuries on her hands, back, and buttocks.
Confirming the arrests, Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the suspects will face justice.
"Police have apprehended six men linked to the physical assault of a woman falsely accused of theft.
"She sustained visible injuries as a result of the attack," said Insp Chakanza.
Public condemnation has mounted over the bus crew’s actions, with strong calls for swift legal intervention.
Following the assault, the passenger who initially reported the missing parcel later realized it had not been stolen, prompting an apology from Zebra Kiss manager Kudakwashe Mupfukirei, who suggested the attackers might have been drunk.
He offered US$300 compensation for Charlotte’s injuries and loss.
Speaking after the ordeal, Charlotte described the attack as heartless and unjustified, expressing deep disappointment in the bus service she once trusted.
"I have always relied on Zebra Kiss for my cross-border trips, but this experience has shattered my confidence.
"Their crew detained me, confiscated my goods, and handed them to the passenger who mistakenly thought her parcel was stolen. I reported the assault, and justice must be served," she said.
