The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) has warned that the country's public hospitals have become ticking time bombs where lives are lost not due to illness, but because of chronic government neglect.
ZINA president Enock Dongo delivered a statement Tuesday, accusing the government of turning a blind eye to a collapsing health system that is now failing both its workers and patients.
“As nurses, we are working under impossible conditions,” Dongo said.
“We are forced to improvise daily just to preserve life. But we cannot continue like this. The system has failed, and the suffering is unbearable.”
Zimbabwe’s public hospitals, which serve as the lifeline for millions, have for years been on life support crippled by shortages of basic medical supplies, broken equipment, and deteriorating infrastructure.
Patients are routinely told to bring their own medication or seek care at private facilities, where fees are unaffordable for the average citizen.
With winter biting, Dongo painted a bleak picture of hospital wards without blankets or even window panes.
“Facilities are deteriorating fast; X-ray departments are not functioning. Diagnostic services are virtually non-existent. Basic lab services are unavailable.
“Nurses cannot conduct essential tests, and the sick are suffering in silence, waiting endlessly in pain,” he said.
