Here are 5 natural, colloquial emotional expressions that are perfect for your next conversation:
😬 on edge = nervous / tense / irritable
e.g. He felt really on edge when she didn’t reply
🌫️ spaced out = distracted / disconnected / mentally
fatigued
e.g. Sorry, what did you say? I totally spaced out for a second
💔 down in the dumps = feeling sad / depressed
e.g. She’s been down in the dumps since she didn’t get the job
😌 a weight off your shoulders = relief after anxiety / pressure
e.g. Finishing that presentation was such a weight off my shoulders
🐜 get under someone’s skin = emotionally affect / irritate someone
e.g. His constant complaining really gets under my skin
We used these expressions yesterday in our C1/C2 Fluency class (at The English Life Academy), which was all about navigating emotions in everyday life. Our students worked in pairs to paraphrase and explain these (and more) expressions using real or imaginary scenarios, and they did an excellent job! 😌
