🌍 Digital Rights, UPR Advocacy and the Future of Internet Freedom in Kenya The #africatechpolicysummit 2025 in Nairobi highlighted challenges and opportunities shaping Africa’s digital future. Hosted by KICTANet, the session on Advocacy Engagement on Digital Rights in Africa and The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) brought together policy leaders, civil society, and tech experts to address urgent threats like internet shutdowns, surveillance, misinformation, and the digital divide. Dr. Wairagala Wakabi (Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA)) stressed that “Internet shutdowns, state surveillance, and misinformation are fundamental threats to democracy and human rights.” Meanwhile, technology continues to empower citizens, especially youth, to mobilise and demand change. Dr. Grace Githaiga called for collective action to safeguard digital rights as human rights, emphasising inclusive growth and democratic governance. With Kenya’s digital rights at a crossroads, local coalitions are vital for sustained advocacy ahead of the UPR review.
