In medieval Europe, towering cathedrals and fortresses became our early "skyscrapers," crafted with sweat, stone, and centuries of patience. The race to the skies truly took form in the 19th century with the advent of steel, elevators, and fireproofing. Chicago and New York birthed the modern high-rise, stacking ambition floor by floor. Fast forward to the shimmering skylines of Dubai, Shanghai, and Nairobi, and we now have glass giants — feats of engineering that house thousands. But in this age of decentralised work, do we still need vertical cities? With Starlink and fibre internet penetrating remote towns and villages, and coffee shops turning into boardrooms, the relevance of traditional office towers is now being challenged. Are we witnessing the twilight of the skyscraper? Or will these towers evolve into hybrid hubs — part office, part community, part vertical farm? It’s a curious time. Buildings are getting smarter. Work is getting lighter. But our desire to build up may just be... eternal.
