🥶ALERT: COLD WEATHER🧊 Our Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) remains on high alert to deal with extreme cold temperatures set for the week. #dems warns that with the cold weather, many will reach for heating appliances to fight off the cold. These can pose a fire danger warns the emergency services. While DEMS remains on high alert, residents are also called on to play their part on fire safety practices. “Understanding how to protect yourself, your loved ones and properties will make a difference in staying safe and alive,” says DEMS spokesman William Ntladi. ⏭️SAFETY TIPS: ⚠️Take extreme caution when dealing with all heat appliances. 🔥Keep combustible materials at least one metre away from all types of heaters. 🟦Refuel paraffin heaters and lamps while still cold before use. If heated, spillages can cause fires. ⛔Do not use cooking stoves as heaters because they are only meant for cooking. 👀Monitor the heating appliances continuously. Never leave children alone around them. ✅Ensure enough ventilation in the house if braziers (imbawula) are used. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide poisoning are dangerous and can be fatal. Preferably, do not use inside. 🛑For any life-threatening emergency, call: ☎️011 458 0911 📱112 (cellphone) #firesafety #dems
