BEFORE YOU CREATE CONTENT, KNOW YOUR BUSINESS!
A lot of people want to start posting content to promote their business.
They want to get followers, likes, and make sales…
But let me ask you one question:
Do you really KNOW your business?
I’m not just talking about the name of your brand or the price of your products.
I mean:
Do you know what problem your business solves?
Do you know who your ideal customer is?
Do you know what makes your product better than others?
Have you studied your competitors to see what they are doing?
Let me break it down with examples…
1. Let’s say you sell perfume.
Knowing your business is not just about saying, “I sell nice perfume.”
You should know things like:
Which ingredient makes a perfume last longer on the body?
Which ingredients can stain white clothes if you're not careful?
What time of the day should people wear a heavy vs light scent?
What kind of perfumes do men like vs women vs teenagers?
What’s the best way to store perfume so it doesn’t lose its scent?
Now imagine using all that knowledge to create content.
Instead of just posting “Buy my perfume,”
You can now say:
“Why your perfume doesn't last all day — 3 things you're doing wrong”
“Ladies, avoid this perfume if you're wearing white!”
“Top 3 perfumes for church service or work hours”
See how powerful that is?
2. If you're a stay-at-home mom selling clothes…
Knowing your business means you understand:
The best type of fabric for hot weather in Nigeria
Which styles hide big tummy and are good for postpartum moms
How to help your audience choose their size when shopping online
The difference between original Ankara and the fake one that fades fast
Now your content becomes:
“Moms, here’s how to dress comfortably for school runs without looking tired”
“How to spot fake Ankara in 2 seconds!”
“Don’t know your size? Let me teach you how to measure yourself at home”
That’s content that sells because it helps people trust you and see you as the expert.
3. If you're a virtual assistant or freelancer…
Knowing your business means you can explain clearly:
What you do
Who needs your service
Why your work makes their life easier
What tools or skills you use
How you're different from other VAs
Your content can then sound like:
“Too busy to reply your Instagram DMs? That’s where I come in.”
“How I help online business owners stay organized using Google Calendar”
“Freelancers: This tool saves me 3 hours a day!”
Moral of the Story: KNOW YOUR BUSINESS!
When you know your business deeply:
You create better content
You attract the right people
You make more sales without shouting “Buy! Buy! Buy!”
So before you post your next flier or video, ask yourself:
"What do I really know about my business that my customers don’t?"
Then start teaching them!
That’s how you win with content.
