One of Uber’s AV partners, Baidu, recently said that it provided 1.4 million rides to the public in Q1. That’s up 75% vs. last year (off a small base!). But not all of those rides were fully autonomous. They started 100% fully driverless rides in China in Feb. Baidu has provided over 11m cumulative rides to the public. They’re partnering with car rental service providers in China to explore how autonomous driving can be delivered. They’re now in 15 cities, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Their global fleet is only just over 1,000 cars right now. One of the question marks around them and similar players is whether they can scale up. Waymo has done 10m cumulative fully driverless rides as of this month (currently at 250k per week). At the end of last year, they’d done 5m (so the last 5m came this year). Still early days but we’re starting to see traction in a handful of cities. There’ll obviously be a lot of attention on Tesla’s roll-out for robotaxis later this year.
