As of February 2025, FutureSA reported that the public institutions of higher education in South Africa faced a shortfall of around 500 000 beds for students. Resultantly, a sprout of black, colored and Indian private accommodation providers around country – specifically in cities or towns where universities and Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions are located has been witnessed.
