Several residents of Kabul, along with some doctors, pharmacies, laboratories, and diagnostic centers, have been accused of overcharging and exploiting patients. They claim that such practices have eroded public trust in the healthcare system, particularly in doctors. Meanwhile, some diagnostic centers confirm that certain doctors receive up to 50 percent of the fees for referring patients to their facilities.
Kabul residents have strongly criticized the profiteering and overcharging by some doctors in hospitals and diagnostic centers, stating that in many cases, doctors prescribe unnecessary tests and medications for personal gain.
Nadira, expressing concern, says that when she falls ill, she cannot afford to visit a doctor due to the high cost of laboratory tests. She adds that the price of lab tests often exceeds the cost of medication and the doctor’s fees. Nadira notes that since learning that some doctors receive commissions from laboratories and X-ray facilities, her trust in the treatment process has diminished. She believes that even when tests are genuinely needed, the perception persists that they are prescribed for the doctor’s personal benefit.
