Today, June 12, marks World Day Against Child Labor. This day arrives as thousands of children in Afghanistan, particularly in Kabul, bear the heavy burden of poverty, injustice, and neglect. These children work from dawn to dusk as street vendors, incense burners, cart pullers, blacksmiths, tailors, or scavengers searching for sellable items among garbage. Some, out of desperation, have resorted to begging on the streets.
Many working children say poverty, unemployment, and their families’ economic struggles have forced them to take to the streets to earn a living. They emphasize that with financial support for their families, many would no longer need to work in the capital’s streets.
In interviews with the Hasht-e Subh Daily, some working children expressed grievances about their living conditions and called for attention from domestic and international aid organizations to address their hardships. They report that some drivers, shopkeepers, and even passersby treat them with disrespect, and in some cases, they face threats or beatings from the Taliban or others. According to these children, their work environment is unsafe, but they have no choice but to endure it, as their evening meal depends on the few Afghanis they earn.
