The reason I don't watch most movies is because of the projection and repetition of concept that is going on in the industry. Gatemen who are imbalance, maids who are talkative, and gardeners who are irresponsible—I don't think the movies really need these people. And at every 2-2 scenes they are all seated in the compound gossiping about their oga-Madam and her husband. I know they're trying to create a formula for comedy or drama, but all it does is make me roll my eyes in exasperation. If I can be heard, or, I mean, if this can go viral, they need a little creativity, a dash of originality, and perhaps a pinch of sanity in character development. Apparently, maybe it is too much to ask for, because every other movie seems to feature the same archetypes: the wicked stepmother, the long-lost twin, the evil rich girl, and of course, the loyal but dim-witted sidekick. I am a lover of movies, but I'm concerned to see us do better, so let's talk about these characters for a moment. The gatemen, for instance, they are NOT really that incompetent—yes, not exactly. They can just be portrayed as, I don't know, competent and doing their job. They do NOT have to be perpetually gossiping and causing trouble—at least, NOT all the time. And don't even get me started on the maids. Talkative? Yes. Efficient? No. I'm beginning to think that they're trying to make a point about domestic workers being nosy, but really, it's just a tired trope. And then there's the gardeners who will NOT mind their business. Irresponsible? Really? These people can just be be shown pruning the plants or watering the flowers instead of lounging around and spreading rumors. I mean, I love a good drama or comedy, but, please, we can start having characters that are more nuanced, more complex, and more human. But no, instead, we're stuck with these one-dimensional caricatures that seem to have been plucked straight out of a bad sitcom. And don't even get me started on the way they're always seated in the compound, gossiping about their boss in every movie. I don't know who the writers of these scripts are, but that's NOT all domestic workers do all day; they have jobs to do, just like everyone else. I know some people might say, “But it's just a movie, relax.” And I get that, of course, I really do. Entertainment is supposed to be, well, entertaining—and MIND-BLOWING. It's just that when you're perpetuating stereotypes and reinforcing negative attitudes towards certain groups of people, it's not just entertainment anymore. It's projection, and it's repetition of concept, and it's lazy writing, not sorry to say. Now, I want to make it clear that I appreciate the effort that goes into creating these movies. I love what you all are doing on YouTube, and I'm grateful for the entertainment. But this is a review, and I'd like to offer some constructive criticism—if I may. I think the movies would be better off without these malfunctioning characters in the script. Let's try something new and let's push the boundaries of storytelling. Let's create characters that are real, characters that are relatable, characters that are multidimensional. Let's make movies that are thought-provoking, movies that challenge our assumptions, movies that inspire us. Meanwhile, I just finished seeing OLD FLAMES, created by Oyebade Adebimpe, and, recently I have also seen ILE ODUN featuring my celebrity mamas Juliet Jatto and Anike Ami, and ITE by anty Oni Damilola. These are wonderful movies and I highly recommend them; the filmmakers skillfully wove together engaging narratives that kept me invested. I didn't even expect less from these big names; the characters were multidimensional and relatable, making it easy to become emotionally invested. If you're looking for quality Yoruba cinema, I suggest checking out these movies. They're a breath of fresh air in the industry, showcasing the talent and creativity of the filmmakers. Go give them a watch and experience the magic for yourself.
