✅ Causes of Cowdriosis
✅️Causative agent: Ehrlichia ruminantium (a rickettsial organism).
✅️Transmission: Primarily by Amblyomma ticks (e.g., Amblyomma variegatum).
✅️The ticks become infected by feeding on infected animals and spreading the disease to healthy animals through their bites.

🐄 CLINICAL SIGNS
👉HIGH FEVER FEVER (UP TO 42°C)
✅️Sudden death in some cases
✅️Nervous signs: convulsions, circling, chewing movements, and stiff gait
✅️Difficulty breathing
✅️Fluid accumulation around the heart and lungs (hence the name Heartwater)
✅️Diarrhoea and weakness
✅️In goats and sheep, signs may be less specific or chronic
---
💊 TREATMENT
👉ANTIBIOTICS:
✅️Tetracyclines (e.g., oxytetracycline) are the main treatment:
✅️Dose: 10 mg/kg body weight, IV or IM, once daily for 3–5 days.
✅️Early treatment increases the chance of survival.
✅️Supportive therapy: fluids, anti-inflammatories, and nursing care may help severely affected animals.
🛡️ PREVENTION AND CONTROL
👉TICK CONTROL:
✅️Regular use of acaricides (pour-ons, dips, or sprays)
✅️Rotational grazing to break the tick life cycle
✅️Vaccination (in some endemic areas):
✅️Live blood vaccine from infected animals may be used under controlled conditions.
✅️Quarantine and monitoring of new animals
👉If you're in a region where Heartwater is common, it's critical to have a preventive tick management plan and to train farm staff to recognize early signs for timely treatment.
